THE BUNKHOUSE

The interior design of the Bunkhouse was a project I undertook starting in 2018. It is additional accommodation on the site of the well-established Loch Ness Inn, situated near Loch Ness on the Great Glen Way. It sleeps 44 guests in a combination of bunk and family rooms.

The brief was to create a design that would appeal to a younger demographic, whilst complimenting the existing offer at the more traditional Inn. As the target market is families and outdoor enthusiasts, I took inspiration from the landscape of the Scottish Highlands and Ordinance Survey maps whilst employing the use of bright colours to appeal to the younger clientele.

Beds

I decided to make the beds myself when I couldn't find a King bed with a perpendicular top bunk. I used kiln dried Scottish Larch from a local sawmill and I was lucky enough to have access to my next door neighbour's workshop/barn. In total I made 4 King bunks as in the above photo, 12 regular bunk beds and 8 single beds.

Signage

As the Bunkhouse is situated on the Great Glen Way I took inspiration for the overall design from Ordinance Survey maps. I painted the directional signage to look like contour lines, as well as the room number signs made from clay.

Kitchen & Communal Area

The kitchen was delayed for a year after our opening in 2020 as communal areas were not appropriate during the height of the pandemic. Originally the tables were going to be sections of the OS map of the Great Glen Way so customers would be able to trace their movements of the day at dinner. Due to cost and time constraints I opted to seal and paint MDF boards with topographical imagery and attach hair pin legs in bright colours.

Bench Seating

There are four bench seats in the communal area with hinged seats to provide more storage space. I made them out of plywood and painted topographical imagery to match the kitchen tables and left the plywood exposed to match the chairs. I also upholstered the seats and wall-mounted back pads in a similar colour to the wall cladding. There are an additional 4 matching round upholstered stools. The coffee tables have been cut in an organic shape and painted in a similar manner to the benches.

Art & Plants

Each room has one of my Tree Rings print which corresponds to the colour scheme of the room. All of the plants have been propagated and grown by me and planted in handmade Jesmonite planters that were made by me.

Under Bed Drawers & Plaques

I made pull-out drawers for every bed with corresponding terrazzo plaques. Each drawer is made from the same Larch wood as the beds with a vibrant stain on the inside to give a pop of colour when pulled out.
